#mentalhealthmonday – me at 23

Hello everyone! Today is my 23rd birthday, so I thought I would give you a little snapshot of my mental health at the moment, as well as like…where I’ve been.

Mental health wise, I’m doing pretty well! This is the most stable that I’ve been in quite a long time, despite the fact that throughout April I’ve had a bunch of physical health problems, as well as being busy with travelling and work. I’m just starting to catch my breath now after basically a whole month of stuff.

In the past two weeks I’ve started a new medication called quetiapine, and I think that’s had a really positive impact on my mental health. It is a second-generation anti-psychotic and it helps with mood conditions (though it seems to be used for a whole host of different illnesses, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression). I was struggling a little bit when I first started taking it because it causes extreme drowsiness – and I already struggle with low energy! My psychiatrist recommended that I take it at night though, so that’s made a big difference. I am wondering whether I should switch to taking all of my meds at night, rather than taking 2 in the morning and 1 at night….we’ll see.

Travelling whilst on medication was an interesting experience. This is the first international trip I’ve taken in a long time, and I found it a little bit difficult to ensure that I didn’t go a whole day without taking my meds whilst I was travelling from the UK to the States. If you’d be interested in a whole MHM post about that, let me know and I’ll write it up. Other than that, I’ve not had much time for therapy this month, so I’m going to try and go back to see my therapist in the next week or so. It’s good to get a top-up, I find.

As you can probably tell, although I’m pretty stable, I’ve had some trouble recently staying up-to-date with my blog. I’m sorry about that! I had posts scheduled for while I was in New York, and after that I found it difficult to get caught up again. Whew, that was a bit of a mess of a post! Sorry about that. Regularly scheduled programming will resume shortly.

    I’m glad you’re feeling relatively stable. Sometimes I think it’s so hard to stop and take a moment to appreciate where we are now, where we’ve been, and how well things are going, all things considered. It’s so much easier, for me at least, to focus on what’s going wrong…but it can be incredibly empowering to take stock of what’s working and what’s looking up in the future.
