Good day everyone! As it is January 1st, that means it is the official start of the Mental Health Book Bingo!
First of all, I want to send a huge shoutout to my fellow hosts Sar, Ayah, Inge and Laura, as well as everyone else who has helped us out along the way. You have all been absolute stars, and I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better group to help coordinate the bingo.
Once again thank you to the marvellous CW who designed and created the board for the bingo – she did an absolutely stellar job!
Today I just wanted to have a little chat about the bingo and why I decided to start it. I saw the amazing bingos that some other people were doing (including the AsianLitBingo and sapphicathon) and I was inspired to create my own one based on mental health. Through my Mental Health Mondays and various work with mental health charities I’ve been exposed to a variety of experiences of mental health, and I wanted to help others to also increase their awareness of people’s experiences. Therefore the Mental Health Book Bingo was born!
I wanted to ensure that the bingo was as intersectional as possible, and that it would encourage people to read outside their comfort zones. Hopefully the board itself has reflected that, as well as my choice of authors to interview on the blog throughout January. Not everyone has the same experience of mental health – it’s such a huge umbrella term! I hope that this comes across throughout the bingo.
Overall, I’d like everyone to take a chance on a book they might not have picked up before. Read stories about people like you, and read stories about experiences that you may never have. But most importantly – keep an open mind, and an open heart.
