It has swung around again! This is, in my mind, one of the most exciting times of the year. What could be better than giving out books to people, for free?!
This will be the sixth annual World Book Night. First conceived by Jamie Byng from Canongate (one of my favourite publishers), it is one of the biggest campaigns to encourage people to keep reading, in conjunction with World Book Day.
The 15 books chosen this year look absolutely wonderful. Each book has clearly been carefully chosen to appeal to different types of reluctant readers. There are thrillers, books for ‘Game of Thrones’ fanatics, and fluffy fiction. The non-fiction includes ‘Band of Brothers’, a brilliant account of one unit of the Second World War, and ‘Reasons to Stay Alive’, a memoir about the power of reading and writing when suffering with depression. I was particularly happy to see this on the list – it really shows how current an issue mental health is, and it’s wonderful to see non-associated campaigns talking about mental health. Finally, on the World Book Night website, you can read samples of all of the books to ensure that they’re the right ones for you!
(I would also check out the previous years’ books, as they include gems such as ‘Skellig’, ‘Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal?’ and ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time’.)
Happy reading everyone! And don’t forget to pick up a book or two tonight 🙂
